Archaeamphora longicervia was a pitcher plant that lived during the Early Cretaceous period (around 146 to 100 million years ago) in northeastern China.
It is the earliest known carnivorous plant and represents the only undisputable fossil record of pitcher plants. Like modern pitcher plants it was able to gain its energy from sunlight via photosynthesis but it gained some of the nutrients by trapping and consuming small animals, usually arthropods (insects, spiders, etc.).
Its name "Archaeamphora" means "ancient pitcher".
