Calamites was a tree-like horsetail plant, which the modern horsetails (Equisetum) are closely related. It lived during Carboniferous and early Permian periods.
Unlike its modern cousins, Calamites was a medium-sized tree that grew up to more than 30 meters (100 feet) high. Calamites were components of Carboniferous swamps forests.
