Mammuthus imperator

Mammuthus (commonly known as mammoths) were relatives of elephants. they lived from the Pleistocene epoch from around 5 million years ago, into the Holocene at about 4,500 years ago in the Quaternary period. Only the northern species of mammoth had a covering of long hair.

Perhaps the most well known species of mammoth was Mammuthus primigenius (woolly mammoth). Other known species are M. subplanifrons (African mammoth), M. africanavus (North African mammoth), M. meridionalis (Southern mammoth), M. armeniacus (Steppe mammoth), M. imperator (Imperial mammoth), M. columbi (Columbian mammoth), M. exilis (Pygmy mammoth), M. lamarmorae (Sardinian dwarf mammoth) and Mammuthus hayi.
