Wattieza was a tree-like plant related to modern ferns and horsetails. It lived during the middle Devonian period about 385 million years ago. Wattieza have been described as the earliest known tree.
It was 8 m (34 ft) or more tall and resembled the unrelated modern tree fern. Wattieza had fronds rather than leaves and reproduced with spores.
